| Naginata is said to have been the weapon of primary
importance in Kukishin Ryu when Kukishinryu was called Shinden Fujiwara
Musouryu before it was reorganized by Yakushimaru Ryujin, as we can
surmise it from the fact that Bojutsu owes its origin to Naginata.

| Techniques handed down today includes unique ones like
Uragiri and Gyakugiri. There are a variety of techniques in which we hook
an adversary by the wrist or neck by using the curvature at the end of
Naginata and get him down. This is the exquisiteness of all-around martial
arts. |
|
| We use a Naginata of 225 cm in length; the double-edged
spearhead is 21 cm long; Sendanmaki 2 is
looped by nine iron wires. |

The origins of Naginata dates back to November, 751A.D., when
Fujiwara Uona, a great-grandson of Fujiwara Kamatari, was appointed
ministerial officer and made a Nagamaki by mimicking Chinese sword Bisento.
Uona also is said to have devised the use of it and taught the techniques
to Sakanoueno Tamuramaro, who was conferred the title Seii Tai Shogun(the
barbarian subduing generalissimo). Tamuramaro put up a remarkable fight
against enemies at Suzuka Kiyomigaseki with the weapon. |
