The Kuki family, the former head of Ayabe han, were conferred viscountcy at the beginning of the Meiji restoration. They were deeply involved in Taira-Minamoto War and contributed to the rescue of the Emperor Godaigo, who was in a critical situation.
The Kukis dominated the sea surrounding Japan by commanding the iron-plated battleship "The Nippon Maru" in the Shokuho period.
Shinto (Nakatomi Shinto), martial arts (Kuki Shinden Tenshin Hyoho) and Shugendo (Kumano Shugendo) went through many ups and downs throughout time in a setting surrounded by the waters of Kishu and mountainous areas of Kumano. They are cultural assets that have been preserved by the family members to date. One can see immortality in them that goes beyond time and the flow of history. |

This website is set up with the cooperation of the chief
priest of Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine; each individual
shrine, temple and person introduced on this site, all of
whom showed us deep understanding toward our project.
We wish to express our deep appreciation for them here. |
